Overview of State Comprehensive Privacy Laws in the U.S.

California laid the groundwork for comprehensive state privacy laws with the passage of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in 2018. Since then, the number of comprehensive privacy laws introduced in state legislatures has grown every year, with close to a dozen (and counting) state privacy laws currently in effect.

This session provides an overview of the current comprehensive state privacy laws, draws comparisons and notes distinctions between those laws, and offers helpful practical guidance on how to interpret and operationalize their requirements.
