Supporting Domestic Violence Survivors Seeking Child Custody (2024 Pro Bono Committee Program)

A primary finding of the 2021 North Carolina Civil Legal Needs Assessment was that family law (particularly child custody) is one of the largest areas of need for unrepresented individuals.

According to the NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 32.5% of women and 30.3% of men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. To assist in meeting an important legal need for this vulnerable population, the NCBA Pro Bono Committee in conjunction with Legal Aid of NC has created this program and clinic to help survivors of domestic violence file an action for child custody.

This program teaches attorneys, paralegals and law students how to effectively gather information and initiate a court action for child custody, in a manner that avoids re-traumatizing the client. It includes introductions to the relevant laws and procedures as well as practical tips on preparing pleadings and forms.
