2023 Juvenile Justice & Children's Rights Section Program

This annual CLE by the Juvenile Justice & Children's Rights Section is focused on assisting attorneys who represent juveniles in North Carolina in juvenile delinquency, child welfare, family courts, and other legal or administrative proceedings.

The CLE this year has three sessions, concentrating on: (1) juvenile rights during interrogation and invocation of the Fifth Amendment privilege, (2) ethical considerations and issues involved in the representation of a juvenile client, and (3) how our courts are working to become responsive to juveniles who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and how attorneys can use this knowledge to better represent clients with ACEs.

Specific topics include:

  • Juvenile Rights/Interrogation
  • Ethical Considerations When Representing a Juvenile
  • Building Trauma Informed Juvenile Courts in North Carolina
