2023 Immigration Pro Bono Program

This item is expired.

The 2021 NC Legal Needs Assessment found that immigration issues present the second most pressing legal need in the state for unrepresented individuals. To help meet that need, legal aid providers have created pro bono projects that serve immigrants seeking asylum but lack enough resources to train and supervise volunteers.

This program teaches attorneys, paralegals, and law students how to effectively gather information and create I-589 Applications for asylum to help experienced immigration advocates assist their clients in obtaining asylee status.

The program includes introductions to the relevant laws, regulations, and policies, practical tips on interviewing immigrants, and important immigration asylum statistics.

INCLUDED SESSIONS

  • Introduction to Asylum Law and Review of the Form I-589
  • Current Litigation/Policies Affecting Asylum Seekers and Background on Asylum Seekers in North Carolina
  • Unaccompanied Children and Child Centered Approach
