North Carolina is home to eight military bases, about 113,000 active-duty and reserve service members, and more than 750,000 veterans. Undeniably, military and veteran populations play an enormous role in our state's economy, supporting over 540,000 jobs and contributing close to $34 billion in personal income.
After being discharged, former military personnel — including more than 475,000 wartime veterans and approximately 225,000 veterans age 50 or over — may experience disabilities and disadvantages that were not present at enlistment. When we needed them on the battlefield to safeguard our rights, these brave men and women answered the call; now, it is our responsibility to protect their rights.
